Discovering Computers
Chapter 11: Information and Data Management
Access Tutorials
Need even more practice and help with Microsoft Access? Here are a few tutorials, along with additional practice files.
- Tutorials at Microsoft.com
- Video that explains the same concepts and database definitions that were discussed in class: definition of a database, relational databases (Access is an example), tables (the data), queries, forms, reports, records, field names and more. The video is using Access 2010, but much of what is discussed, especially database concepts, are the same. The video is an hour and 41 minutes and provides a great review.
Information Systems in the Enterprise
Examples of Information Systems used in an enterprise are listed on page 491, including Manufacturing Requirements Planning (MRP). As discussed in class, MRP is used in many manufacturing facilities, including the automotive plant where I worked years ago. MRP is a system used to monitor and control inventory, purchases, and more. Whether you're majoring in Business, Accounting, Supply Chain Managment, Marketing...you're likely to need to know about MRP.

- Remember we discussed some of the problems with MRP? Such as, integrity of the data? Learn more from Princeton University (they are actualy pulling the information from Wikipedia). In the Contents section, click on 'Problems...' and 'Solutions',' much of which was discussed during class.
